Lorraine Gamman, PhD is Professor in Design Studies, School of Graphic and Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins (CSM) school of Art and Design, which is part of the University of the Arts London. She is also director of the practice-led Design Against Crime Research Centre (DACRC), which she set up in 1999 after ten years of teaching product, graphic, and industrial design at CSM. She wrote her doctoral dissertation on shoplifting at Middlesex University in 1999. Her work with the designer Adam Thorpe and DACRC has won several awards for design innovation and together they have co-curated more than 15 design exhibitions and catalyzed a number of DAC product ranges including Stop Thief chairs, Karrysafe bags, and Bike Off! anti-theft "caMden" bike stands (visit www.designagainstcrime.com). She is a member of the Home Office's Design and Technology Alliance that advises Britain's Home Secretary and is also Vice Chair of the Designing Out Crime Association. She has written several books and many papers about visual culture and design and crime issues.
