Martha J. Smith is associate professor in the School of Criminal Justice and director of the Center for the Study of Crime and Transportation at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. She teaches courses in criminological theory to graduates and undergraduates, as well as criminal procedure and criminal law courses for graduate students. Her research interests include crime on public transit and paratransit (taxis), vandalism, and decision-making by victims and offenders, and by police officers and judges. Dr. Smith has worked as a senior research analyst at the New York City Criminal Justice Agency, executive director of the Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorney's Association, research director at the Center for Crime Prevention Studies at Rutgers University, and a research consultant in London. She has been involved in a number of different types of research projects, and has taken the lead in studies of crime on the New York City subway system; crime prevention measures used by taxi drivers in Cardiff, Wales; and vandalism decision-making among youngsters in London. She edited (with Derek Cornish) Theory for Practice in Situational Crime Prevention and Secure and Tranquil Travel: Preventing Crime and Disorder on Public Transport . Dr. Smith has taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and at Cardiff University. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology from Brown University, her law degree from New York University, and her master's and doctorate in criminal justice from Rutgers University.
