1. Does street prostitution take place in more than one area?
Yes, street prostitution takes place in many areas such as Scott Ave., bars, hotels, cars, and other hidden streets.
2. What conditions make the area(s) attractive for street prostitution?
These areas are attractive for street prostitution because it is where they can find clients, have not gotten in trouble, and are mainly hidden/secluded. No one has interfered with them at these locations.
3. If street prostitution occurs in several areas, how are they similar and different?
They are similar in that many of them are in secluded areas, allow for quick negotiations, and fast car pickups. They are different as some places are more discreet and hidden than others. Some areas are more crowded and have richer clients than others.
4. What area businesses are harmed by the presence of street prostitution?
Many bars and hotels are harmed by the presence of street prostitution. Many women are found going into bars interacting with men in the bars and many hotels have problems with prostitutes coming in multiple times a night and leaving the rooms a mess.
5. What area businesses support and/or benefit from street prostitution?
Although it is not good, some bars and hotels benefit from street prostitution because they get more service from them and their clients.
6. Is the street prostitution market in each area old or new? Has it changed in size recently? If so, why?
It seems that street prostitution in the city is not new, but many people have said that it is growing in size and becoming more of a problem recently. As it has gotten worse, more people have left the city, leading to less surveillance. I think this has caused street prostitution to increase and become a bigger problem because they are taking over the area and pushing the rest of the community out.
7. Do street prostitution areas have a reputation as being dangerous or safe for clients?
It seems that depending on the area, it is more dangerous or safe. For example, in upper Scott Ave., it seems that there are wealthier clients and safer spots. Meanwhile in lower Scott Ave., there is more violence and drugs causing it to be more dangerous.
8. Are street prostitution areas isolated, or busy with other activities?
There is a mix of both. It seems that the areas like the bars and hotels are busy, making it easy to blend in. Additionally, there are areas like alleys/streets and parking spaces that are more isolated.
9. What other types of crime occur in the area? How much is related to street prostitution?
Other types of crime such as burglary, theft, assault, and drug deals occur in the area. A majority of it is related to street prostitution because there is a lot of violence happening between the clients and prostitutes and many drug deals occurring related to street prostitution.
10. If street prostitution were forced out of a target area, where would you predict it might reappear?
If street prostitution was forced out of a target area, I think it might reappear in towns similar to where Scott Ave. is with bars, hotels, busy/highly concentrated areas where clients can be easily found. Along with this, the area will need secluded streets and areas where the street prostitution can take place.
