Tamara D. Herold (formerly Madensen) is an associate professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She also serves as director of the Crowd Management Research Council and associate director of the Center for Crime and Justice Policy. She uses the crime science perspective to study the criminological impact of the design and management of places, including crowd dynamics that lead to violence. Her research and teaching projects involve working directly with police, private security, and stadium/venue operators. Her other research interests include the opportunity structures of drug markets, violence, and white collar crime.  Dr. Herold co-developed the internationally recognized violence reduction strategy P.I.V.O.T. (Place-based Investigations of Violent Offender Territories). P.I.V.O.T. is designed to stop shootings in chronically violent urban locations. Police, city departments, and local communities work together to disrupt opportunities for violence, using a problem-oriented approach that focuses on uncovering and dismantling place-networks that facilitate violent activities. In 2017, P.I.V.O.T. received the international Herman Goldstein Award for Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing. Ms. Madensen received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the California State University, San Bernardino, and her doctorate from the University of Cincinnati.
