Anthony A. Braga is distinguished professor and director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northeastern University in Boston. He was formerly a senior research associate in the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management of the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. His research focuses on working with criminal justice agencies to develop crime prevention strategies to deal with urban problems such as firearms violence, street-level drug markets, and violent crime hot spots. He has served as a consultant on these issues to the Rand Corporation; National Academy of Sciences; U.S. Department of Justice; U.S. Department of the Treasury; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; Boston Police Department; New York City Police Department; and other state and local law enforcement agencies. Dr. Braga was a key member of the Boston Gun Project / Operation Ceasefire working group that was responsible for reducing youth homicide in Boston by almost two-thirds during the late 1990s. The Operation Ceasefire program has received numerous prestigious awards including the International Association of Chiefs of Police Webber-Seavey Award for quality in law enforcement, the Herman Goldstein Award for Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing, and the Ford Foundation Innovations in American Government Award. Dr. Braga has also been involved in a number of other strategic crime prevention programs such as the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Youth Crime Gun Interdiction Initiative and the U.S. Department of Justice-sponsored Strategic Alternatives to Community Safety Initiative and Project Safe Neighborhoods. He received his master's in public administration from Harvard University and his doctorate in criminal justice from Rutgers University.
